Get clicking, Detroit!

A friend just turned me on to Campbell's Click for Cans campaign, and the Lions need Detroit's help!

Here's the deal: the NFL team that garners the most votes on the Click for Cans website during the alloted time period wins a donation of Campbell's soup to the foodbank of its choice.

How big is the donation?

Based on the winning team's official roster and stats, Campbell's will donate one can of soup for each pound of the winning team's total team weight. That's a lot of soup!

The undefeated Click for Cans champions, the Green Bay Packers, have a strong lead already - as I write this, the Packers have about 579,000 clicks, and the Lions have about 12,000 - but there's still plenty of time to catch up.

Or to win another prize: Campbell's will donate 2006 cans to the team with the greatest Click for Cans improvement over last year. So get clicking, and help conquer hunger in metro Detroit!

Both contests end midnight on December 15. You can vote once a day.

Click here to vote or for more information.

Detroit's CCS Recognized as Top Design School

Creative types and locals have long known the College for Creative Studies is one of the nation's top design schools. But now the private design school in Midtown, known around here simply as CCS, is garnering worldwide attention.

Last week, Business Week published its first annual Top Design Schools list, a compilation of the best design schools across the globe. Along with prestigious D-schools like Bocconi University in Milan and the Rhode Island School of Design, Detroit's CCS was named to the list.

Kudos to CCS for a well-deserved acknowledgement!

For the complete list, please click here.

Three more Detroit development projects move forward

New developments in Detroit continue, thanks to some state tax incentives:

*On October 17, Governor Granholm announced that Central Brush Park LLC and 3100 Woodward LLC will move forward on two related developments in Detroit's historic Brush Park neighborhood, which is located between I-75, Mack Avenue, Woodward Avenue and Brush.

The dual development project, which calls for 347 new housing units and commercial and retail space, was approved for state and local tax captures valued at $7.2 million, and a brownfield Single Business Tax (SBT) credit valued at $10 million, by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). The developers will invest $112 million of their own money.

*Plans to redevelop the historic Savarine Hotel in Detroit into 118 market-rate apartments will also move forward, thanks to the MEDC's recent approval of $277,270 in tax credits for the $2.78- million project.

Built in 1926, the Savarine Hotel was a luxury, 524-room hotel in its heydey.

More recently, the historic structure served as a 158-unit, low-income apartment building; it fell into disrepair in 2004.
