Partying "After 5" at Pulse

I attended a great party last night at Pulse in downtown Detroit.

The packed shindig was a VIP relaunch event for After 5, a fledgling Detroit company making major waves in metro Detroit's social scene - particularly among the young professional set.

I'll have more information on After 5 and its dynamic founder and CEO, Kerry Doman, next week, but wanted to throw out a last-minute announcement about After 5's public relaunch party this evening. If you're scurrying around to make plans for tonight, look no further. After 5's public relaunch gets rolling at 9 pm at the fabulous Detroit lounge, Pulse.

Why do this instead of spending another night at home or your normal hangout? After 5 events are a terrific way to meet other 21 to 30-somethings and Pulse is one of downtown Detroit's best recent additions. Plus, there's no cover for After 5 members (sign up for After 5's newsletter here - bottom of the page - and you're a member).

If tonight's event is anything like last night's or the other After 5 events I've attended, you will not be disappointed.

Life in the Metro D

Listen up, Metro Detroiters. It's time to make your voice heard.

United Way for Southeastern Michigan, metro mode and One D want you to tell them about your quality of life in metro Detroit.

Do you love it here? Do you think things could be a little (or a lot) better? They want to know.

Take this quick survey (5 minutes) or this slightly-longer one (10 minutes) and tell the powers that be what you like about our area and what you don't. Your answers are strictly confidential.

The results of the survey will be published in a few weeks. One D will use the data to tackle its six priorities for the region - educational preparedness, economic prosperity, race relations, regional cooperation, regional transit and quality of life.

Not familiar with One D? Here's the scoop:
Formed in November 2006 to transform Metro Detroit into a vibrant regional area, One D is composed of United Way for Southeastern Michigan, New Detroit, the Detroit Regional Chamber, Detroit Renaissance, the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan. For more information on One D, please click here.

What's goin' on?

My readers are the best! I've been MIA for the past month, and cannot tell you the number of messages I've received from people asking if I am okay and when I'll be back (one person even gave me their phone number and said to call them if there is anything I need!) A big thank you to all everyone that dropped me a note; I really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Now, on to where I've been hiding out these past four weeks (and, no, I was not abducted by aliens or on a month-long Colorado ski trip). The truth is, I've been right here in the D, lovin' every minute of this fabulous metropolis.

Why the long hiatus then?

January was a big month for me, for two reasons: one, I prepared to leave my full time job in the securities industry to take on freelance writing full-time; and two, I took on the editor-role of Detroit Living, City Living Detroit's annual magazine, last year and the new edition goes to print in a few weeks. Throw a new puppy and a somewhat-new husband into the mix, and ... you get the picture - my free time was seriously lacking.

Now, onto the good news: January 31 was my last day at my old job, so I'm now officially a full-time freelance writer. Meaning, I'm now doing what I love (writing), and I'll have a lot more free time (for Girl in the D).

I need a few more post-free days to work on Detroit Living, but should have something new up here before the end of the work week.

Until then, I encourage you to browse the archives (located in the left sidebar, near the bottom) or visit a few of the Detroit-related sites in my link list.
